What is the recommended age for an orthodontic screening?

Age 7 is the age recommended by the American Association of Orthodontics for orthodontic screening. Not all kids need early treatment. Early screening allows for guidance of what is the best time for your child.

What is Phase One?

Phase one is treatment in the 7 to 10 year old age group while there still may be about primary (baby) teeth. Phase one creates space for permanent teeth to erupt in a normal place. Early treatment can also correct jaw growth to correct overbites, underbites, deep bites and open bites.

Why have phase one treatment if a second phase may be needed?

Phase One is preventive care aimed to reduce the extent of future treatment and have a better result. In phase one, we prevent loss of space and create space so that developing teeth have space to come in to a normal position. Phase One treatment, when needed, greatly reduces the need for.

Why is our practice famous for Invisalign?

Dr Hickory has been the largest user of Invisalign in America every year for over 20 years having treated over 10,000 patients with Invisalign. Several members of our clinical team also have up to 20 years of experience with aligners.

Do all children need phase one?

No. Not all kids need phase one. Our complementary screening will clearly illustrate what is the best time for your child to have orthodontics.

What is more effective braces or aligners (Invisalign)?

In most cases, aligners far out-perform braces. Reasons for the exceptional speed and effectiveness of aligners include:

  • computer modeling of the result. So there is no wasted movement and nearly no side effects.

Do all practices use the latest technology?

Many doctors are reluctant to give up effective systems that they have used for many years. This is understandable.

What is the treatment time for orthodontic?

Historically, orthodontics was 2 to 3 years. With our aligner system, remote monitoring and experience, our average treatment time is less than a year.

What is the cost of orthodontics?

The cost of orthodontics, insurance benefit and payment plan will be presented at the complementary consultation. The cost is based on the level of service needed for your particular case. We charge the same for Invisalign as braces.

Does insurance pay for orthodontics?

Your dental plan may have an orthodontic benefit. We can research this for you prior to your visit. We participate in most insurance plans.

How often are office visits needed during orthodontic treatment?

We used to do office visits for aligners approximately every 2 months as we do with braces. However, a check visit with aligners is mostly checking the fit of the aligners. We now have an app for for phone, allowing us ability to check every week and determine if you are ready for the next aligner. This is far better that routine office visits.

What’s new with braces?

We have the latest in brace technology including highly flexible wires that work up to 3 months. We also have brackets that are clear and custom printed for the patients teeth. This saves finishing time.

We see many adults at BDS. Dr Hickory has extensive experience treating adults with braces and aligners.

How long do you need to wear retainers?

Throughout life teeth can shift. Most orthodontists use something like Invisalign as retainers. They just need to be worn enough to keep a good fit to the teeth. This is typically nighttime.
